Understanding Rotator Cuff Tears
Surgical rotator cuff repair requires the surgeon to access the shoulder joint and re-attach the torn tendon(s) to the humerus (the upper arm bone) using anchors and sutures. Depending upon the severity and location of the tear(s), the surgeon requires a larger or smaller opening to the joint:
- Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair: Multiple incisions, about a centimeter long, allow the surgeon to insert a tiny camera and specialized instruments to effect the necessary repairs. This is the least invasive option.Â
- Mini-Open Repair: This option combines arthroscopic and open surgical techniques, accessing the shoulder joint through an incision 2 – 4 centimeters wide. This option provides direct access while keeping the opening relatively small.
- Open Repair: Large tears requiring extensive reattachment or tendon reconstruction may require larger incisions reaching 5 – 10 centimeters wide to access and repair the torn tendon(s).Â
- Added pain
- Added tissue damage
- Anesthesia
- Scarring
- Risk of complications
- Risk of a frozen shoulder
- Lengthy, painful recovery
- Pharmaceutical painkillers
- Risk of post-traumatic arthritis
- Risk of depression
Fortunately, a torn rotator cuff can heal without surgery.Â
What to Expect During Regenerative Shoulder Treatment
Each therapy session lasts roughly 30 to 90 minutes:
- First, we galvanize your innate healing processes.
- Next, we focus your body’s healing energies on the source of your pain.
- Finally, your body works to restore the damaged tissues.
While some patients experience improvement in just a week or two, most will take 2 to 4 months to feel real pain relief. Some may take up to nine months before they feel the full results of their rotator cuff tear treatment without surgery. To ensure the best outcome, we urge patients to follow the recommended treatment protocol and do their rehabilitation exercises.
