Staying hydrated with plenty of water each day also keeps your body fluids at stable levels — providing the needed liquids for your body.
Getting regular exercise can also help the knee. Exercise builds muscle tone. When the leg muscles are working more efficiently, it takes some of the work and pressure off the knee joint. Stretches involved in yoga and Pilates are great for strengthening muscles and preventing joint damage.
Doses of Supplements
Many supplements provide dosing instructions based on how they are presented; for example, as a pill, powder, or liquid. It’s important to ask your provider and follow proper dosing instructions. Some supplements can be harmful when high levels are ingested. Others may not work well in combination with one another or may interact with prescription medication. Experts caution that taking greater numbers of supplements does not guarantee less pain.
Vitamins for Knees
There have been many studies done linking bone health and vitamin D supplements. Medical News Today says vitamin D deficiencies may be part of the cause of joint pain because it affects calcium levels.
Vitamin D levels can be supplemented naturally by safe levels of sunshine and eating vitamin D-rich foods like salmon, egg yolks, and mushrooms. Following more of the Mediterranean diet in the way you eat gives you the vitamin and minerals needed for robust bone health.

- You may be familiar with the spice turmeric, thought to have pain-reducing qualities. It’s believed the chemical compound in turmeric, called curcumin, is the reason inflammation is reduced, providing relief from soreness. - According to Healthline, another widely used pain-reducing supplement is SAM-e, or S-adenosyl-L-methionine. It has been known to not only alleviate symptoms of osteoarthritis but depression as well. SAM-e is something your liver produces naturally from an amino acid called methionine that, among other things, may repair cartilage.
- Glucosamine is an amino sugar found in the cartilage of our joints. The levels in our bodies tend to decrease as we age, so it’s believed that supplementation can improve cartilage inflammation and make the knee less stiff.
- As for chondroitin, researchers say it may reduce pain and increase joint mobility. It is naturally found in the connective tissue of your bones and cartilage. Many medical experts say it can increase collagen in the joints, which serves to cushion the joint.
