Knee Pain Supplements: A Guide to Choosing

Whether you’re dealing with an injury or degeneration of aging knees — pain in that joint can greatly affect your quality of life. Because the knee sustains the weight of the body, that repeated stress can be punishing after years of wear and tear, even if you are not suffering from arthritis in a number of joints. Johns Hopkins Medicine says it’s a vulnerable joint due to stress from every day or high-impact activities.

Knee Pain Supplements

So, what can you do for those aching knees? It’s always good to check with your provider before self-diagnosing. Your provider may want to do imaging to ensure the stability of the knee and that you did not sustain an injury that may need repair.

In many cases, your aching knees will be a result of pain caused by the ravages of time. But there are knee pain supplements you can take to help restore joint health and avoid the overuse of over-the-counter pain relievers.

Natural knee pain supplements are readily available, but some are better than others. Studies show that knee supplements can help reduce pain and inflammation for some people. They work by boosting deficient levels of certain substances in the body.

Naturally Lubricating Knees

Sometimes the stiffness in your knees can make you feel like the Tin Man character from the movie “The Wizard of Oz.” In the movie, oil pumped into the joints helped remedy the problem.

While the answer is not as easy for humans, there are certain foods that can promote better joint lubrication, allowing the cartilage to work more efficiently, which in turn, provides greater flexibility in movement.

Some of those foods include oils that can naturally lubricate. Those foods include green leafy vegetables, nuts, fish, avocados, and olive oil.

Staying hydrated with plenty of water each day also keeps your body fluids at stable levels — providing the needed liquids for your body.

Getting regular exercise can also help the knee. Exercise builds muscle tone. When the leg muscles are working more efficiently, it takes some of the work and pressure off the knee joint. Stretches involved in yoga and Pilates are great for strengthening muscles and preventing joint damage.

Doses of Supplements

Many supplements provide dosing instructions based on how they are presented; for example, as a pill, powder, or liquid. It’s important to ask your provider and follow proper dosing instructions. Some supplements can be harmful when high levels are ingested. Others may not work well in combination with one another or may interact with prescription medication. Experts caution that taking greater numbers of supplements does not guarantee less pain.

Vitamins for Knees

The Arthritis Foundation reports on a myriad of vitamins that are thought to ease the pain of arthritis. Those include the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E, and vitamins D and K. Although studies are inconclusive on linking vitamins to knee pain relief, these vitamins do help the body with inflammation. Additionally, vitamins D and K work to increase bone strength, and vitamin K can improve cartilage.

There have been many studies done linking bone health and vitamin D supplements. Medical News Today says vitamin D deficiencies may be part of the cause of joint pain because it affects calcium levels.

Vitamin D levels can be supplemented naturally by safe levels of sunshine and eating vitamin D-rich foods like salmon, egg yolks, and mushrooms. Following more of the Mediterranean diet in the way you eat gives you the vitamin and minerals needed for robust bone health.

Seven Knee Pain Supplements

If you’re looking for the best supplement for knee pain, you may want to take a closer look at the joint health supplements offered at QC Kinetix. We utilize the restorative biologics of regenerative medicine to minimize musculoskeletal aches or injuries. Our supplements include highly effective non-inflammatory ingredients designed to promote joint health.

  1. You may be familiar with the spice turmeric, thought to have pain-reducing qualities. It’s believed the chemical compound in turmeric, called curcumin, is the reason inflammation is reduced, providing relief from soreness. Curcumin is an antioxidant that we use in our joint supplements at QC Kinetix.
  2. Boswellia is an ancient herb used for anti-inflammation. At QC Kinetix, we use this in our joint supplements to help reduce symptoms of arthritis.
  3. Another component of the QC Kinetix Joint & Bone supplement is collagen type II — the main structural component of cartilage. We include this in our supplement because studies have shown that taking oral collagen type II has helped to reduce pain in both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.
  4. Many people use fish oil or omega-3’s as an anti-inflammatory for rheumatoid arthritis. Doses of fish oil range from 300 mg to 1,000 mg a day. Beware, often people do not like the aftertaste you can get with this knee pain supplement.
  5. According to Healthline, another widely used pain-reducing supplement is SAM-e, or S-adenosyl-L-methionine. It has been known to not only alleviate symptoms of osteoarthritis but depression as well. SAM-e is something your liver produces naturally from an amino acid called methionine that, among other things, may repair cartilage.
  6. Glucosamine is an amino sugar found in the cartilage of our joints. The levels in our bodies tend to decrease as we age, so it’s believed that supplementation can improve cartilage inflammation and make the knee less stiff.
  7. As for chondroitin, researchers say it may reduce pain and increase joint mobility. It is naturally found in the connective tissue of your bones and cartilage. Many medical experts say it can increase collagen in the joints, which serves to cushion the joint.
