All Bone Health Supplements Are NOT the Same: Here’s How to Choose

Remember when you were a kid, and your mom made sure you drank your milk every day? Mom knew what she was doing trying to keep your bones healthy with the calcium found in dairy products.
Calcium is found naturally in foods like green leafy vegetables, including collards, kale, mustard greens, turnip greens, and foods like salmon and almonds. Mom probably tried to get you to eat those, too. Calcium is so important to our bone health that it is often added to foods like orange juice, bread, and cereal.

Calcium for Our Bones

The problem is that calcium is very much needed for strong bone health, but our bodies don’t produce calcium, so we must introduce this important mineral via our daily diet. When you don’t get enough calcium, you may have health issues associated with weak bones. In children, it can stunt growth, and for adults, low bone mass can put you at risk for osteoporosis. Those at risk are youth and adults 50-plus. Millions of aging Americans have been diagnosed with osteoporosis — a condition causing bones to become weak and brittle.

How do you combat it? The Institute of Medicine recommends that adults take in a total of 1,000 to 1,500 mg of calcium daily to avoid poor bone health. Most of us intake about 500 to 600 mg of calcium a day via the foods we eat. This means we need bone health supplements to make up the difference and maintain healthy bone mass.

Red Flags About Supplements

Calcium is important but may not be for everyone. There are health conditions that can be exacerbated by calcium, and in this case, supplements should be avoided. For example, there is a condition called hypercalcemia that causes excess calcium in your bloodstream. Supplements are not recommended for people with this condition because they can actually have the opposite effect and weaken bones.

While it’s still being studied, the Mayo Clinic says some research indicates a link between calcium supplements and heart disease. The same is true when it comes to calcium supplements and prostate cancer. More analysis must be done, but it’s best to speak with your physician about all the medications and supplements you take to ensure your health and safety.

Sometimes supplements can interact with prescription medications, including those that treat blood pressure, synthetic thyroid hormones, antibiotics, and calcium channel blockers.

Vitamins and Minerals Important for Bone Health

When you take a bone health supplement, it’s very important to read the label to ensure the supplement contains vitamin D, which is responsible for proper calcium absorption.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that transports calcium to the bones. You should take a maximum of 500 mg at a time because that’s all that can be absorbed in one serving.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is another fat-soluble vitamin that works with vitamin D for bone health. You want to look for vitamin K in the K2 form because it does the best job when it comes to improving bone density.

Magnesium

Magnesium is another important mineral for bone health. It builds bone strength

If you are looking for an effective supplement that helps regenerate bone, check the label for iron or collagen. Collagen is the main protein found in bones and these nutrients play a role in getting oxygen to your bones for healing. It also contains amino acids, which help build bone, muscle, ligaments, and other tissues. It has commonly been used to relieve joint pain. Collagen not only helps with bone health, but research has shown the benefits of collagen for joint health as well.

Another nutrient you should look for to promote your body’s healing properties is boron. It has properties that help the body with preventing osteoporosis.

Add magnesium and zinc to the list as well. Both work in conjunction with vitamins D and K. Magnesium helps convert the vitamins into a form that allows calcium absorption and Zinc promotes bone-building.
