Disc Arthroplasty Surgery: Risks, Recovery, and Other Options
Blog > Disc Arthoplasty Surgery
The Procedure
This procedure is often considered as an alternative to spinal fusion surgery, which involves fusing two or more vertebrae together to create a stable structure. Unlike fusion surgery, disc arthroplasty preserves motion in the spine, which can reduce the risk of problems in adjacent spinal segments. However, not all patients are good candidates for this procedure, and it does include some risks, such as infection, implant failure, and nerve damage.
This is considered major surgery, as patients are placed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision in the patient’s back or neck, depending on the location of the damaged disc. The damaged disc is then removed, and an artificial disc is inserted.
The recovery time can vary depending on several factors, such as the patient’s age, overall health, the extent of the surgery, and the type of artificial disc used. However, it typically requires an overnight hospital stay for up to three days to control pain and monitor the patient’s progress. Most patients will be prescribed physical therapy following the surgery, with many returning to work within two to four weeks. Patients are often advised to avoid bending, twisting, or lifting heavy objects for the first few weeks after surgery to avoid putting undue stress on the spine. Full recovery for spinal disc replacement can take six months to a year for the spine to fully heal and for the patient to regain their full range of motion and strength.
Arthroplasty Surgery Options
Many patients will try other pain-relieving avenues before considering a surgical procedure. For example:
- Physical therapy can be a highly effective treatment option for many patients with back pain or spinal conditions. A physical therapist can work with the patient to develop a customized exercise and stretching plan to strengthen the muscles around the spine and improve flexibility and mobility.
- Medications: Over-the-counter or prescription pain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or opioids, may be used to manage pain and inflammation associated with spinal conditions. Other medications, such as muscle relaxants, may also be prescribed to alleviate muscle spasms and other symptoms.
- Epidural injections: Epidural steroid injections can be used to deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the affected area of the spine, providing temporary relief from pain and other symptoms.
