Sciatica occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine or narrowing of the spine compresses part of the sciatic nerve. This can lead to inflammation, numbness, pain, and weakness in the affected leg. The pain radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from one's lower back through the hips and down each leg. Sometimes the pain can feel like a jolt or electric shock.
