Ankle sprains are caused by accidents on the playing field while ankle strains occur due to overuse of the ankle. Ankle strains gradually causes wear and tear of the ankle joints.
Ankle sprains and strains are usually caused by incidents where one "rolls" the ankle inward. The lateral ankle ligaments are not as strong as the medial ligaments and so the ankle has a tendency to roll inward, injuring the lateral ankle ligaments. The most common ankle ligament injury with a sprain is to the anterior talofibular ligament. Chronic, or repetitive, ankle sprains can lead to ankle joint instability over time. There are many other potential causes of ankle pain, including degenerative causes like arthritis. If you are suffering from this condition, contact our ankle pain management specialists for help.
